Behind The Lens: 'Littermates' Rewards Good Behavior While Something Sinister Waits Outside

Karaoke, hot tubs, dance parties, and favorite meals sound like pretty good rewards for surviving the end of the world. Just follow the rules, earn your “nifties,” and whatever you do—don't wander beyond the gate.
That peculiar bargain sits at the center of Scott Tinkham and Michael Woloson's Littermates, an 88-minute absurdist horror feature screening at Fantastic Fest 2026. Against the backdrop of a mysterious war, two disoriented survivors find shelter in an isolated English countryside cottage where safety gradually begins to feel a lot like control.

Welcome Home, Now Follow The Rules
Liam (Joey Bader) and Mel (Kaylee McGregor) arrive bloodied, speechless, and unable to fully understand what has happened to them. Their enigmatic caretaker Chester (Oliver Woolf) takes them in, bathing and feeding the pair before slowly teaching them how to speak and perform everyday tasks again.
Inside Chester's carefully constructed world, good behavior earns "nifties" that Liam and Mel can exchange for small pleasures. While Liam adapts, Mel becomes increasingly suspicious of the boundaries surrounding them, turning her attention toward the woods, a locked gate, and the outside world Chester insists is far too dangerous to enter.

When Safety Starts Feeling Like A Cage
Sirens, smoke, and distant threats keep the possibility of war lingering beyond the cottage, but 'Littermates' places its immediate tension much closer to home. Mel's determination to understand what lies beyond Chester's rules begins testing the fragile relationship holding their unusual makeshift family together.
That collision of absurdity and unease fits naturally with the filmmakers behind it. Co-writer and director Scott Tinkham has built his work around dark comedy and emotional sincerity, often following characters searching for meaning in increasingly strange circumstances. Michael Woloson, meanwhile, brings a filmmaking background rooted in precise visual storytelling and intimate explorations of memory and time.
Together, those sensibilities give 'Littermates' plenty of unsettling territory to explore. If safety requires surrendering your curiosity, independence, and understanding of the outside world, the film leaves one uncomfortable question hanging over its cottage: what exactly are Liam and Mel being protected from?
Littermates screens Sunday, September 20 at 2:00 PM during Fantastic Fest 2026 at the Alamo Drafthouse Lamar in Austin, Texas.
