What’s the origin behind your name?Where are you from?
The origin behind my name, Madison Jay, is that back in high school I went by the name “Messiah” an I knew that it wouldn’t be well received because of the ‘blasphemous’ undertone. One day while doing a pre-test I looked in the back of my US History book and saw James Madison and John Jay’s names by each other and instantly thought MADISON JAY together would be a really dope name because it didn’t sound like the typical rapper name. I’m from Raleigh, North Carolina; Wake County
What moment in hip hop has stood out to you the most?
The moment that stood out to me the most in hip-hop was when I saw my face in XXL Magazine. It stood out because it finally felt like damn, I made it. I’m a part of hip-hop so to speak.
If you weren’t doing hip hop what would you be doing ?
If I weren’t doing hip-hop I’d probably be doing commentary for wrestling, a fashion model, or quite possibly an athlete.
If you could work with anyone in the industry who would it be?
If I could work with anyone in the industry it would be Roc Marciano. He’s on my collab list and producer list. He’s very unapologetic about how he raps and produces and that’s energy I thrive on!
What is your creative process? Do you write or freestyle your rhymes?
My creative process is get the beat and then begin to mold the song either creating a hook or simply writing bars that come to mind. I write 85% of my material because I like to tangibly see what I’m creating. The other 15% I’ll freestyle just to showcase some artistic range.
What do you have going on right now? (Merch, Music, Events, Collabs, etc)
Right now I just dropped a new visual “Wanna B Down” off my last album ‘DIASTEMA’ and I’ll be releasing another visual “The G’z” on September 1st, the day before me birthday. Also I’m featured in the new XXL Freshman Issue inside the Artist To Watch section, I’d like to think that’s a good thing. My merch brand County! continues to grow and new products will be available online. Lastly, new music dropping real soon. Make sure to grab my most recent albums ‘DIASTEMA’ and ‘Purple Fried Chicken’ on all streaming platforms.
What’s one thing you wish someone told you about the music industry which would have drastically changed your career?
One thing I wish someone told me about music or the music industry was that the more you put in, the more you get out. I’ve put in a boatload of work just this past year and the fruits of that have blossomed tenfold compared to previous years when I and my team were tryna make everything make sense.
Superhero or Villain?
Super Hero. Build not Destroy.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years I see myself alive and thriving. My label County! Enterprises will have multiple successful acts and my bank account will reflect all the hard work put in.
