What is your favorite record from the 90’s and why?
This is a very difficult question. With me being 25, I still deem that music era the greatest of all time. I’ve had enough time to appreciate the creativeness and uniqueness of every sound. Surprisingly I would have to say Eye To Eye by Tevin Campbell. The first time I heard it was from A Goofy Movie (Disney soundtracks will forever be the best!), and I just fell in love with the energy, the message, the melodies, and the upbeat tempo. I feel it resonates with my journey to becoming one of the greatest to ever do it. While still speaking on the adversity and challenges throughout.
If you could produce the sound track to a movie, which genre or movie would you choose?
I would pick the Jackson 5 movie. Michael Jackson is my favorite entertainer of all time, and I believe I could really create a dope sound that would fit very well. I’m a sucker for harmony in my opinion, and a group with different vocal ranges will always sound better than a solo artist. There’s just too many outcomes you can play with.
How would you describe your hometown sound?
Being from South Carolina, it’s a lot more melodic rap and rnb. It’s like the coastal wave, southern music gives you more euphoria than say the hardcore drill rap in the north. Now that I’m in Brooklyn I have the perfect mix to incorporate to ensure my creative genius never stagnates.
When you feel discouraged, what keeps you motivated?
Knowing that when I keep pushing, I’m that much closer to being able to help the world with my sound. That’s all I want, for people to be able to save Uni’VeT’s music helped me get through whatever struggles or negative they may endure.
Do you play or watch any sports or video games?
I watch the NBA, UFC, and I play NBA 2k from time to time. It keeps me sharp and helps me make quick and precise decisions under pressure.
What is your favorite motivational lyric or life quote?
Will Smith said “Too many people spend money they haven't earned, to buy things they don't want, to impress people they don't like.” It basically means be yourself, because at the end of the day you came in this world alone and you’ll leave alone. You can never truly be happy with yourself when you care more about other people and their perception of you.
If you made a song for the year 3000, what do you think would be different about it?
The year 3000 I’m sure there will be flying cars, aliens coexisting, easier space travel, robot workers and housekeepers. So I would definitely make a very futuristic song, maybe even put some on beat Morse code.
Who are you looking to collaborate with next?
I will collaborate with anyone, but I would be most excited to work with Drake, Roddy Ricch, Rod Wave, Kevin Gates, Don Toliver, and anyone from YSL.
Spring, Summer, Fall or Winter?
Summer most definitely.
Will you drop an exclusive record with CEL and where can people connect with you at?
Yes of course, I would love to! My Instagram handle is @_univet_ , that’s also my name on SoundCloud, Twitter, and my Facebook is Davyon Drayton.
