A candle doesn’t scream when the wind comes, instead it steadies, flickers, and holds. That restrained intensity defines José González’s long-awaited fifth studio album, Against The Dying Of The Light. Arriving after more than four years of silence, the record unfolds as a measured meditation on humanity, technology, and moral responsibility. The title track sets the tone immediately, pairing philosophical weight with the calm and hushed, resolute vocals. Carried by González’s unmistakable finger-picked guitar comes acceptance without surrender and clarity without cynicism. Reflecting on algorithmic incentives, unchecked technological acceleration, González explains the album thesis as:

'Against The Dying Of The Light' is a song reflecting on humanity in 2025. It’s about accepting who we are and what led us here, since the past can’t be changed. Then, about refocusing our attention on the challenges ahead, like pervert incentives and algorithms that aren't in line with human flourishing. Even though natural selection led us here, we don’t have to do what is in the gene’s best interest. And even though cultural evolution led to our societies, we don’t have to keep all the narratives if they drag us down. And even though we have enormous opportunities with new technology that can eventually design and copy itself, we don’t have to build it right away if it has the potential to make us obsolete. We can rebel against these replicators, rebel against the dying of the light.

José González frames the project as an act of resistance rather than despair. His words mirror the album’s emotional posture, grounded in humanist thinking and a deep concern for collective flourishing. The album, released via Mute Records in the U.S. and City Slang internationally, will include the tender Spanish-language track Pajarito, written for his son. González will bring this new body of work to life on a cross-country U.S. tour starting this spring. Watch the title track’s official video below and stream "Against The Dying Of The Light" now.
