Some of the hardest stories to tell aren't written into songs. They're the ones artists carry long after the music stops. Jim James, the three-time GRAMMY-nominated singer-songwriter and founding member of My Morning Jacket, is opening a deeply personal chapter with his first memoir, One Wonders. Arriving April 13, 2027, through Simon & Schuster, the 336-page book explores nearly three decades of music, personal struggles, and the complicated journey of finding his voice both onstage and away from it.

Beyond The Music & Behind The Memories

From discovering music through The Muppet Show to founding My Morning Jacket in Louisville, Kentucky, James revisits the experiences that shaped his artistic identity. The memoir examines the realities of life in a touring rock band, including exhausting travel, strained relationships, financial uncertainty, and the extraordinary connection that comes from sharing music with audiences.

James also addresses previously undisclosed childhood trauma and the aftermath of a serious onstage injury in 2008. He recounts his experiences with depression, excessive drinking, and suicidal thoughts, alongside his eventual efforts to confront his mental health and alcoholism. The result promises a more vulnerable perspective on an artist whose career has often celebrated peace, love, and human connection. Reflecting on several years of therapy and what inspired him to share these experiences publicly, James explained:

I feel like it’s our generation’s job to tear down those walls and share our triumphs and horrors. When we do, we’ll find that we’re all walking around with the same things inside of us, the good and the bad.

His perspective challenges the tradition of keeping personal struggles private, suggesting that sharing difficult experiences can create opportunities for understanding and connection.

Finding Wonder Beyond The Spotlight

Throughout his career, James has explored different creative directions through My Morning Jacket, solo recordings, production work, and collaborations including Monsters Of Folk. 'One Wonders' shifts that exploration inward, examining how the person behind the music has changed alongside the artist.

The memoir also offers a message about seeking support rather than carrying every struggle alone. James hopes that discussing his own experiences will encourage others to recognize that recovery, connection, and renewed appreciation for everyday life are possible.

There's something fitting about a musician who has spent decades communicating through melodies finally giving his personal experiences an entire book. Rather than presenting artistic success as the end of the journey, James is examining what it takes to keep growing after the applause fades.

Sometimes finding your voice means finally saying the things you couldn't sing.

'One Wonders' will be published April 13, 2027, in hardcover, ebook, and an audiobook narrated by Jim James. Preorders are available now, including autographed copies through Carmichael's Bookstore in Louisville.
