“It’s a travelogue of longing.” With that phrase, London-based folk/Americana artist Merrick Winter captures the soul of his new single. Via Tone Tree Music and featuring the Lockeland Strings orchestra , The California Zephyr is the title track from his upcoming sophomore EP due May 9. Blending sweeping orchestral textures with rootsy introspection, Winter’s live rendition is a poetic flight through time and place. Inspired by real-life train conversations with strangers across the U.S., from Amish travelers to former hippies and Southern matriarchs, The California Zephyr EP carries echoes of Jackson Browne, Randy Newman, and Tom Waits. Winter shares:

I find comfort in making that feeling permanent through songs.

From the heart of London to the vast railways of America, Winter weaves a sonic story rich with longing, movement, and fragile memories. Recorded at the iconic British Grove Studios, the live recording was captured in under an hour on a newly purchased Gibson ES-340, with Winter calling the orchestral performance “like flying.” Behind the boards is producer Matt Zara, who helps elevate Winter’s gentle lyricism and Flamenco flourishes into cinematic territory. Stream the lush live version of the title track and follow Merrick Winter on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Bandcamp, and TikTok.
