Fish Hunt Break The Pattern On "Monkey See Monkey Do"

Fish Hunt, the New York folk-rock project led by Lucy Mondello, turns political frustration into an exposed musical conversation on Monkey See Monkey Do. The track is Mondello’s first attempt at fingerpicking, and the exposed figures reveal whether a player understands the pulse or is only following the person beside them. This song uses that same tension to question imitation with, Tex Patrello answers the guitar on piano. Widening the arrangement, the back and forth lets the repeated phrase land as both a hook and a warning. Mondello explains how directly that warning arrived:
This song was truly a stream of consciousness moment for me. I remember when I first re-read ‘monkey see, monkey do, we are totally screwed’ back to myself and thought, ‘oh wow, that’s precisely how it feels to be suffering the consequences of an incompetent, destructive, inattentive administration.’ This song features Tex Patrello on piano, one of my all-time favorite players.
"Monkey See Monkey Do" is the latest look at Life, Fish Hunt’s third album, due October 23 through VHS Records. Recorded at VHS Studios in Brooklyn, the record brings together Tex Patrello, Melaina Kol, Boone Patrello, Joe Taurone, Dan Poppa, and other collaborators. Its title track mixes played instruments with sample loops, suggesting an album interested in how human gestures sit beside repeated patterns. That makes this single feel like more than a political statement: it is also a study in who sets the pattern and who chooses to break it.
