Girl Tones Let "Precious" Hold Power Without Raising Its Voice

Power does not disappear when a band lowers the volume. Girl Tones prove that on Precious, the title track from their debut album. "Precious" was written in memory of the sisters’ grandmother, who called them her precious, and the cover preserves handwriting from one of her cards. Emily Buchwald directs the official video with the duo performing beside a piano in a field as deer move through the background. The image remains understated enough to protect the song’s farewell while giving its natural setting room to speak. Girl Tones explains:
As much as the song is about losing a loved one, it’s also about gaining a new loved one.
Sisters Kenzie and Laila step away from the muscular rock of their earlier singles and build the song with sparse piano, ascending vocals, strings and emotionally charged drums. The arrangement treats restraint as structure, letting the dynamic control create a softness leading into the next meaningful swell. Brad Shultz of Cage The Elephant produced the album and will release it through his Parallel Vision label alongside Big Loud Rock. Girl Tones will follow the album with their first headline East Coast tour, including Mercury Lounge in New York and DC9 in Washington.
