Imperfection is not a flaw of the human condition. Katie Schecter creates a deeply human testament to imperfection, motherhood, and the legacy of sound. “If you listen closely, you will hear my heart…” With those words, Schecter sets the tone for brand new album Empress. Recorded live to tape at New York’s iconic Diamond Mine Studio while pregnant with her daughter, the album captures Schecter in a moment of transcendence for an artist, mother, witness, and vessel. Featuring production from her husband Nick Bockrath and performances by heavyweights Nick Movshon, Homer Steinweiss, Russ Pahl, Leon Michels, and Matt Combs, Empress radiates a soulful warmth that could only be born through truth, tension, and total surrender. Schecter says:

‘Empress’ is the birth of a new idea…for anyone who loves something unconditionally…for those who treasure what it takes to be a woman, our strengths, our nuances and imperfections alike...I only did this to leave something behind when I evaporate…for the pickers, the truth-seekers…something woven by skilled and tired hands, a pattern worthy of every stitch.

The title track opens the record with a rush of intuition—written in a single sitting, as if summoned rather than composed. Across 11 tracks, Schecter explores resilience on Run River Run, vulnerability within relationship in Hide My Weapons, and inner stillness with Pay It No Mind. "Empress" is not just an album, each track is stitched with emotional rawness and sonic intention. The closing song, Hiding Place, begins with the moment Schecter first heard her daughter’s heartbeat. Schetcer delivers an intimate recording that becomes the heartbeat of the record itself.
