A mirror is supposed to return the person standing in front of it. Nicole Atkins makes that promise feel uncertain in the visual for “Singing in the Mirror. Its large melodic shape gives Atkins room to sing like a narrator and a warning at the same time. The narrator warns the family about dream crushers while also reminding herself, "when there’s no one else, don’t forget yourself." Instead of dropping the biggest moment into the song all at once, the music builds toward it across the phrase like a long crescendo. The rhythm section stays firm underneath her, while producer Pat Sansone leaves enough air where a family home can belong to the living, the dead or both at once. Atkins describes the story inside the glass:

It’s almost a ghost story. Is this a ghost family haunting the house and me, or am I the ghost haunting them?

”The song comes from Drama, her first album of all-new material in more than six years. around the vocal for every change in color to register. The video was filmed at Red Gables Estate in New Jersey after a mirrored drumhead helped give the idea its center. Atkins cast her friend Colin’s sister Brynn and her daughters as the young family, allowing their resemblance to make the haunting feel inherited.
