Pokey LaFarge Slaps A Rhythm Into "Hambone"

Sometimes the body becomes the best instrument in the room. Pokey LaFarge taps into that simplicity with a hip-shaking groove born from producer Elliot Bergman striking rhythm against his own thigh on Hambone. Bass and drums quickly join the conversation, giving the handmade percussion enough muscle to turn the experiment into a full-fledged party. LaFarge’s affection for blues, early jazz, rock ‘n’ roll, ragtime, and boogie are treated like ingredients in the opening his forthcoming album. Frequent collaborator Jacob Butler carries that loose spirit into the official video where LaFarge explains where that instinct began:
It’s just a party track, you know? It shows how, in the end, a lot of what I do is really just dance music.
That dance-floor impulse is only one corner of the musical map LaFarge draws across Rent Money. Produced by Bergman, the record moves through electric country funk, gospel, reggae, urban blues, and other branches of 20th-century American music. Songs including My Baby Loves Me, The Thing, and title track Rent Money place lively arrangements against everyday pressures, social observations, and personal experience. That mixture of tradition and individualism has long kept LaFarge difficult to box into one genre. "Rent Money" may pull from decades of American sound, but "Hambone" proves Pokey LaFarge still knows exactly how to make those roots swing in the here and now.
