Sister Sadie Turn Thirty Hours Of Road Into "Marlboros In Muskogee"

Some songs need a writing room; Marlboros In Muskogee needed a van, a trailer and nearly thirty hours of road. Sister Sadie turn a demanding run through Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arizona into a progressive-bluegrass travelogue. Where exhaustion keeps making room for wonder, Deanie Richardson, Dani Flowers, Jon Randall Stewart and Jessi Alexander wrote songs from the trip which included a super blood moon and more highway than anyone wanted to see at first. Jaelee Roberts carries the story with a lead vocal clear enough to keep every stop visible. Gena Britt’s banjo supplies the rolling wheels, Richardson’s fiddle stretches the horizon, Katie Blomarz-Kimball keeps the bass steady and Rainy Miatke’s mandolin gives the phrases a sharper edge. Richardson remembers the mood changing almost as soon as they left:
We drove all of this in a van, pulling a trailer. Coming up to this trip, we were all kind of dreading it, because it was going to be so much riding and driving. And from the minute we left home, everything about this trip was magical.

Their shared experience keeps "Marlboros in Muskogee" from sounding like scenery collected through a window. Sister Sadie formed at Nashville’s Station Inn in 2012 and became the first all-female group named IBMA Entertainer Of The Year in 2020. The group enters the 2026 IBMA Awards with eleven nominations, another reminder that its progress has come through playing as one unit.
