A fresh start doesn’t always arrive with fireworks. With New Leaf, San Francisco indie-pop mainstay The Reds, Pinks & Purples opens 2026 in a softly luminous haze, pairing bittersweet reflection with melodic restraint. Led by songwriter Glenn Donaldson, the new single drapes droll introspection over chiming guitars and steady rhythms. Directed by Karina Gill, the visual mirrors the song’s emotional economy, allowing Donaldson’s voice and phrasing to linger where sentiment often hides. The single captures the fragile optimism of trying again while knowing better and that openness is the point. Donaldson explains:
People read some of the more humorous lines in my songs as irony, but honesty is funnier… There’s enough abstraction in the images on this one that the listener can find their own messages.

“New Leaf” doesn’t insist on reinvention; it invites it. The release signals more to come from the group’s forthcoming album, due later this year via Fire Records. Following the warmly received The Past Is A Garden I Never Fed, Donaldson continues expanding a catalog. The Reds, Pinks & Purples will also bring this new chapter to the stage with a hometown show alongside Constant Smiles at San Francisco’s The Knockout on January 22.
