Toronto punk disruptor ThxSoMch bares his nerves on A Sharp Pain. Its the grimy, distorted centerpiece of his commanding debut album The Sound Of You Laughing, out now. With its crushing guitars and shadowy atmosphere, "A Sharp Pain” captures the loneliness of isolation while fighting off despair, emerging as both a release and a reckoning. The official video mirrors the song’s grit, amplifying its themes of suffocation and survival. Reflecting on the album, ThxSoMch explains:
It put me in the best mental place I’ve been in for a long time. No phone, no English, no sense of time—just a flow state that let me escape everything else. Creating this was like a cigarette after a long craving. I hope it can be that for someone else too—a fix, a release, something to hold onto when everything else slips. It’s the sound of acceptance and the sound of burying what’s really going on. It’s mockery and coping, choking and surviving.

Written in Brazil during a seven-month creative lock-in without phones, English, or distraction, "The Sound Of You Laughing" became both self-expression and escape for ThxSoMch. The result is a fearless debut that collides post-punk, alt-rock, and rap with unflinching honesty. Produced by longtime collaborator grayskies and mixed by Mike Crossey, the album is a charged mix of chaos and catharsis with but it’s “A Sharp Pain” that cuts deepest, a track born in less than two hours from a stream of intrusive thoughts.
