Violet Grohl Serves Up A Strange Slice Of "Bug In The Cake"

Written By: Big C

Not every ghost story needs a creaking door or a midnight scream. Sometimes it just needs a microphone and a little distortion. Violet Grohl brings an intriguing supernatural undertone to her Vevo DSCVR performance of Bug In The Cake. Inspired by the paranormal activity surrounding her move into her late paternal grandmother's home, the song finds an unusual intersection between memory, mystery, and melodic alternative music. Standing confidently at the microphone with her band surrounding her, Grohl lets the performance breathe beneath flashing pink, blue, and white lighting. There is also something refreshing about hearing an emerging artist allow the musicianship to command the frame, transforming a personal family experience into a striking live presentation.

"Bug In The Cake" demonstrates how an intimate experience can take on an entirely different personality once it reaches the stage, before a second DSCVR performance of Often Others is set to follow. The performance arrives during an impressive year of artistic development for Grohl, whose debut album, Be Sweet To Me, was released May 29 through Auroura Records and Republic Records. Recorded in producer Justin Raisen's Los Angeles home studio, the project draws from the alternative music of the late 1980s and early 1990s, with influences including Pixies, Soundgarden, Cocteau Twins, The Breeders, and PJ Harvey. Following her television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she launched her first headline tour. Grohl's performance offers another opportunity to hear the personality behind the record. Sometimes the most memorable thing about a ghost story isn't what haunts the house, but what the experience inspires someone to create. Let us know your thoughts on the visual below.
