How do you see the music industry changing this year?

I hope that the music industry continues to reflect the diversity of our world, that we continue to tell stories that represent everyone, and that our voices come together with love and unity.

What's the most unexpected place you've found musical inspiration?

Duane Reade (aka Walgreens)... I was deeply affected by the blue and green fingernails of a checkout person at Duane Reade. (The song is off my debut album, Erin & Her Cello, called Irene). Her nails were not press on nails, not acrylics, nothing fake–  they were fully natural and curled in spirals.

What's your favorite anthem of all time?

Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey ! ! !

What's your favorite song to perform live?

A twelve bar blues called Bitten Me Bad. A love song, I talk about how this person I’ve fallen for has “Bitten Me Bad,” but I give references to multiple animals, as well as the results from being bitten and in specific places. ;) ALL JAZZ VOCALISTS SHOULD SING THIS SONG!

How do you come up with new song titles?

For me, titles usually come from the lyrics- whether the title is the chorus, or a line in the verses. I’m very lyric driven, as a songwriter, so they often come from the lyrics. However, there are always exceptions– my latest single, Lullaby of 55” is not specifically “announced” in the chorus, but Highway 55 is referenced in the lyrics of the song.

How do you choose which songs make it onto an album?

I choose the ones that I am most excited about–  Then, I try to hear their connections. Those connections can be rhythmically driven, they can be lyrically driven, mood, etc. But I’m only three albums in, and I'm looking forward to writing more specifically for a certain project– vs just “writing songs.”

What's your favorite collaboration you've done so far?

I’ve worked more than a few times with actor, writer, and vocalist Adam Enright. We’re currently collaborating on a much larger concept that I can’t say too much about– yet. But it’s beautiful.

If you were a racecar, what brands would be sponsoring you?

If I was a racecar, I would be an electric car sponsored by the NYC Bird Alliance and NPR! Woot!!!
