Hinterland Music Festival is entering a new era ahead of its 2026 edition with the near completion of a permanent outdoor stage at its expanded festival grounds in St. Charles, Iowa. The large-scale infrastructure investment arrives as the festival prepares for its 11th annual gathering, scheduled for July 30 through August 2, featuring artists including KATSEYE, Lorde, Mumford & Sons, and Kali Uchis.

Over the last decade, Hinterland has steadily evolved from a regional destination into one of the Midwest’s most recognized independent music festivals, drawing attendees nationwide while maintaining a strong connection to its rural Iowa setting.

Expanding The Footprint

The festival grounds have grown significantly in 2026, expanding by 130 acres to nearly 400 total acres across camping, parking, and festival operations. Of that space, 27 acres are now dedicated to the main festival concourse, creating additional capacity and flexibility for both audience experience and production infrastructure.

Located roughly 30 minutes south of Des Moines near Interstate 35, the site now ranks among the Midwest’s largest outdoor music venues. Festival founder Sam Summers described the permanent stage as part of a long-term vision for the property and the festival itself. Summers said:

From the beginning, our goal has been to build something lasting here — not just for one weekend, but for the long term. This permanent outdoor stage allows us to keep growing Hinterland in a thoughtful way, improve the experience for fans and artists, and continue establishing this part of Iowa as a special place for live music in the heart of the Midwest.

Designed Around The Landscape

The stage was designed by Goché inclusions in collaboration with the festival’s ownership and operations team, with an emphasis on integrating the structure into Warren County’s natural terrain. Rather than overpowering the landscape, the project was intentionally planned to complement the region’s rolling hills and tree lines while maintaining the durability required for large-scale live events.

The open-air structure spans approximately 8,000 square feet, with the performance platform elevated seven feet above grade and reaching an overall height of 65 feet. Built on a concrete foundation with a steel frame and insulated metal panel system, the stage is engineered to support the festival’s continued growth for years to come.

Building A Long-Term Destination

Since launching in 2015, Hinterland has cultivated a reputation for combining major touring artists with a more intimate, community-driven atmosphere. Previous lineups have included acts such as Lana Del Rey, Tyler, The Creator, Zach Bryan, Noah Kahan, Chappell Roan, Phoebe Bridgers, and Bon Iver, helping establish the festival as a destination that balances scale with accessibility.

The permanent stage marks the festival’s most visible physical investment to date and signals a broader shift toward permanence and sustainability in the live-event space.

As more independent festivals face operational and economic pressures, Hinterland’s infrastructure expansion reflects confidence not only in the festival’s future, but in Iowa’s growing place within the national touring landscape.
