How many times do you edit a song before releasing it? When do you finally know a track is done?

I go through enough necessary steps to make the best music possible for me. However many steps it takes, I’m going there.

How do you decide on the cover art for a release? Do you take the lead creatively, or trust your photographer/director to run with the vision?

I pretty much control over 85% of my career and imagery. I lay the vision out. I definitely take consideration from others but I steer the process mainly.

Which streaming platform do you enjoy using the most—and why? Is it about fan access, functionality, payouts, or community?

I love Bandcamp. I love the payouts obviously but I just love the artist friendly interface and feel of the site.

What’s the studio atmosphere like for you? Do you prefer solo sessions or feeding off other energy? Walk us through your ideal creative space.

I really like to record dolie by myself to be honest. I have everything already prepped  and ready to go. I don’t like to fuck around in the studio. I’m a well oiled machine in that booth inspired by guys like Tupac and Lil’ Wayne.

What’s your perspective on staying independent vs. signing with a label? Where do you see the biggest benefits—and biggest sacrifices?

I think you should do whatever floats your boat. If you want a deal and go thru that process then by all means do it and if you want to be independent then by all means go ahead. I’ve been 100% independent my whole career so obviously my mind frame is based off of that.

Where has been your favorite venue to perform so far? What made the experience memorable?

My favorite venue I’ve performed in was The Ritz in my hometown of Raleigh. The energy is electric and it fits just enough people to make a crazy show.

Do you think artists should be more vocal about political or social issues? Why or why not—and do those views influence your music?

With great power comes great responsibility. That’s just how the game goes. You really don’t owe anybody chit if we’re being honest so it takes a different kind of person to focus on someone or something bigger than themselves.

Are you making a New Year’s resolution—or starting/stopping something cold turkey? What’s your mindset heading into the new year?

You already know how I feel about the resolutions thing lol.

What song (yours or someone else’s) reminds you of winter—and why? Is it nostalgic, motivating, or calming?

The song in my catalog that reminds me of winter would be ‘99 Escobar, The Finer Things, or like Carolina’s Finest Freestyle. All New York type beats that just give me a winter vibe with cold ass snow and frigid ass wind.

What’s a motivational quote or mindset you live by? And where can people connect with you and follow your journey?

It’s chess not checkers. Follow me @themadisonjay on all platforms!
