Newly launched independent film company Subtext has acquired North American rights to Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul, the forthcoming documentary exploring the life and legacy of Gregg Allman. The acquisition, made in association with Rolling Stone Films, marks Subtext’s inaugural release following its January 2026 launch.

Directed by GRAMMY® and Golden Globe Award-winning filmmaker James Keach, the feature-length documentary traces Allman’s journey as co-founder and frontman of The Allman Brothers Band and as one of the defining architects of Southern rock. Subtext plans a theatrical release later this summer. Brian Levy of Subtext said:

Gregg Allman’s music is woven into the fabric of American culture, and this film captures both the artistry and the humanity behind the legend. We’re proud to bring the film to American audiences, offering devoted fans rare insight and archival material while introducing Gregg’s legacy to a new generation.

A Portrait Of Artistry & Reckoning

'Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul' weaves together never-before-seen interviews and rare archival performance footage, building an intimate portrait of an artist shaped by profound personal tragedy and artistic conviction. The film reflects on the death of Allman’s brother and bandmate Duane Allman, his battles with addiction, and the emotional weight that informed his songwriting.

Anchored by electrifying concert footage capturing the Allman Brothers Band at their creative peak, the documentary positions Allman not simply as a performer, but as a cultural force. His songwriting—including modern standards such as Midnight Rider, Whipping Post, and Dreams—cemented his place in the American blues-rock canon.

Producer Michael Lehman, who also managed Allman, emphasized the personal nature of the project, calling the film a reflection of Allman’s “true essence” and enduring musical impact.

Cultural Legacy Beyond The Stage

Beyond biography, the documentary explores the broader cultural ethos of the Allman Brothers Band—one grounded in artistic freedom, collaboration, and a rejection of racial divisions in the American South. The film highlights the band’s deep respect for Black musical traditions and its integrated lineup during a period when such collaboration was far from the norm.

It also examines Allman’s complicated relationship with fame, including his highly publicized marriage to Cher, and the tension between public mythology and personal authenticity.

Director James Keach, whose previous credits include the Academy Award-winning Walk The Line and acclaimed music documentaries on Glen Campbell, David Crosby, and Linda Ronstadt, described a personal connection to Allman’s story—particularly themes of brotherhood, addiction, and redemption. James had to say:

I personally connected to Gregg Allman in his close relationship to his brother and his battles with addiction. For me, Gregg’s incredible voice resonates not just in his music but in his humanity, in overcoming the murder of his father, the early death of his brother Duane, and his personal demons. His soulful voice and brilliant songs reflect a life of redemption and hopefully will inspire all who witness his journey.

A Strategic First Release For Subtext

Founded by Danielle DiGiacomo, Brian Levy, and Teddy Liouliakis, Subtext was created to champion music-driven and culturally resonant cinema. The acquisition signals the company’s intention to build a catalog centered on iconic artists and culturally significant storytelling.

The film was produced in collaboration with PCH Films and Amblin Documentaries, with multiple award-winning executive producers attached. Rolling Stone’s Head of Film and Premium Content, Alexandra Dale, also serves as executive producer, reinforcing the project’s editorial and cultural alignment. She adds:

Few bands have shaped the sound and mythology of American music like the Allman Brothers Band, and Rolling Stone has long been honored to chronicle their rise, reinvention, and resilience. We’re proud to help bring Gregg Allman’s story to the screen in a way that captures the depth, complexity, and soul of his legacy.

Gregg Allman, born December 8, 1947, in Nashville, Tennessee, died in 2017 due to complications from liver cancer. Over five decades, he helped shape the mythology and sound of American rock music. His legacy includes induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a GRAMMY® Lifetime Achievement Award, and multiple scholarship funds supporting future generations of musicians.

'Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul' is slated for theatrical release this summer, bringing a definitive portrait of one of American music’s most distinctive voices to audiences across North America.
