#ComingUp: Eric HZ Expresses Two Worlds Of Love With "Child" & "Encounter"

Written By: Big C

A child's laughter can become the sweetest introduction to a song, especially when the melody comes from a father's heart. Chinese singer-songwriter and producer Eric HZ, also known as Zhao Hechen, brings that sentiment to Child (《孩子》). Opening with the actual laughter of his children, the recording introduces an intimate family moment before developing its broader message about parenthood and acceptance. The use of Mandarin adds another musical dimension, as the language's tonal inflections and natural phrasing help shape the relationship between lyrical expression and melody. Eric draws from his cultural foundation while exploring the unconditional love that remains through a child's mistakes, struggles, and personal growth. That philosophy extends to his participation in the Recording Academy's 2026 A Conversation with Leaders In Asian Music. Eric expressed a defining belief about cultural exchange:
Asian Pop should be a door, not a wall.
Where "Child" looks outward through a father's devotion, Encounter (《还好遇见你》) turns inward to examine the search for meaning, spiritual direction, and a relationship with God. Inspired by Eric's personal question, "What is the meaning of my existence?," the composition approaches faith as a source of purpose and reassurance, complementing the familial love explored in its companion release. Trained under celebrated Chinese soprano and opera artist Wan Shanhong, Eric is continuing to present messages which reach beyond linguistic boundaries. An appearance alongside Tan Jing at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, also reflects his efforts to strengthen artistic exchange between Chinese and American audiences.
