Kendall Street Company Let "My Captain" Lose The Map

A captain without a map can still give orders, but Kendall Street Company make sure we hear the moment nobody should follow them. My Captain, the second song from Yodeling Astroman, pulls its central figure from Moby-Dick and sends him toward revenge with his judgment already slipping. Distorted guitar creates the rough water, while the saxophone cuts across the track like a warning horn from another ship. The single has a dramatic responsibility every time an instrument enters, so the danger feels like movement rather than background scenery. Recorded, mixed, and co-produced by Scott Gordon in Virginia Beach and Charlottesville, guitarist Ben Laderberg found the character while reading Melville and decided to spend some time inside that dangerous frame of mind. He recalls:
My Captain is a dark tale that I hope our listeners will never have to experience in their real lives. This song came to be as I was reading Herman Melville’s great American novel Moby-Dick. I felt inspired by the concept of a mutilated sea captain that has lost his marbles in the name of revenge and figured it’d be fun to write in that world for a bit.
"My Captain" follows Don’t Wanna Be Gone as the band continues introducing "Yodeling Astroman" one strange transmission at a time. The album arrives October 23 through Gitcha Records, the same day Kendall Street Company celebrate with a hometown release show in Charlottesville. Before then, the road passes through Brooklyn Bowl on October 9 and Infinity Music Hall on October 10. Listen to "My Captain" before deciding whether this is a voyage worth boarding.
