Queens-based indie pop enchantress Majorette channels anxiety and irony into a charmingly witty single, Steaks. Released today, the track glimmers with jangle pop brightness, violin swells, and conversational vocals that examine spiraling over the smallest of decisions—like confronting a landlord about frozen beef. The wordplay of “steaks” and “stakes” cleverly punctuates the tune’s theme of imagined catastrophes, wrapped in the warmth of lo-fi melody and glockenspiel-twinkled self-reflection. Majorette brings it all to life tonight at NYC’s Slipper Room, headlining a one-of-a-kind variety show featuring a magician, ventriloquist, aerialist, and Philly’s The Noisy. Majorette recalls:
I eventually worked up the nerve to knock on their door, but not before playing out the best and worst case scenarios in my head.

That inward tug-of-war is delightfully exaggerated in the song’s accompanying 16mm black-and-white video—styled as a vintage Méliès silent film. Directed by Paul DeSilva, with costumes handmade by Majorette herself, the video stars the artist as both a vaudeville magician and their assistant, playfully reenacting a literal man-vs-self magic act with a knife-throwing twist. Collaborators on the song include David Ball, Chris Williams, and more, with production support from Eamon Ford at Livingrooms in Ridgewood. Watch the video, stream “Steaks,” and get swept up in her whimsical sonic universe. Connect with Majorette on Instagram, YouTube, Soundcloud, and Bandcamp.
