Shooter Jennings Reunites Waylon Jennings & Jessi Colter On "Same Old Blues"

A family archive can hold more than history. Shooter Jennings proves that with Same Old Blues featuring Jessi Colter. It's a previously unheard performance that brings his late father, Waylon Jennings, back beside his mother, Jessi Colter. Originally written by J.J. Cale, the song was produced during sessions Tony Joe White recorded with Colter. White plays one guitar, Waylon brings his signature picking style, and Richie Albright supplies the drum feel. Colter also follows White’s direction to whisper-sing the record in what she called her "Rock n’ Roll Voice." Shooter restores the session without trying to make it sound like it was recorded today. Director Will Acuña keeps the official video close to Shooter’s studio and the restoration process. That combination gives the song a softer delivery, keeping the musicians and the blues period foundation connected. Shooter had this to say:
This one was so special to me because it featured Tony Joe White on one guitar and Waylon, with his signature guitar pickin’ style, alongside Richie Albright’s unmistakable drum feel.
Shooter built the album around relationship struggles, unrequited love, and a younger energy that separates these recordings from Songbird. Jessi Colter also appears on “I’m Tired,” giving her unheard work a meaningful place within the project. The song previews Diamonds, the second collection of unknown Waylon Jennings recordings Shooter uncovered after opening his father’s archives in 2024. Physical editions and downloads arrive November 13 through Son of Jessi/Thirty Tigers, followed by streaming availability on December 11.
