Trying to solve your own chaos feels like cracking a conspiracy. LA-based rock project Shunkan—helmed by Marina Sakimoto—returns with a larger-than-life new single, Usual Suspects. Released alongside Rite Field Records, the track is the second preview of her long-awaited album, Kamikaze Girl, dropping May 6, 2025. With brightly toned guitars and Sakimoto’s emotive vocals, “Usual Suspects” channels both emo nostalgia and raw indie rock energy. This track is a blistering investigation of self-sabotage and the struggle to piece life together amid chaos. Sakimoto explains:

I wanted to write about the process of trying to better your life while still acknowledging that you’re in the thick of it. Trying to figure out your own shit can feel like solving a cold case—it’s messy, confusing, and sometimes brutal. But at least you’re trying, and that’s what matters.

Recorded in Joshua Tree, CA and produced by Alex Newport, "Kamikaze Girl" is Shunkan’s first studio album in over five years. The album’s first single, “Hellbound,” showcased this duality of melancholy and desire, setting the stage for a release that’s as introspective as it is explosive. Having signed to Rite Field Records last fall, Shunkan is set to reclaim her place in the indie scene. With "Kamikaze Girl," Sakimoto is at her most refined and introspective yet—a journey from self-doubt to self-acceptance wrapped in crunchy riffs and raw confessions.
