Spaer Turns An Apartment Invasion Into An Unforgettable Finale On "These Bugs"

Inspiration has a funny way of crawling across the living room floor. Spaer, the solo project of Psymon Spine co-founder Peter Spears, closes the chapter on Lessons and Nonsense by releasing These Bugs. Sparked by an ant infestation inside Spears' apartment, the final preview of the EP transforms an everyday nuisance into an imaginative rock opera filled with dreamy harmonies, fuzzy guitars, and guest vocals from Katie Mertucci. Equal parts playful and unsettling, the track embraces storytelling, expanding the colorful world that has gradually unfolded across the EP. Explaining the creative shift behind the project, Spears shares:

I was bored with my regular lyrical content and started writing narrative songs about animals and inanimate objects. The songs took on a picture book-like quality, though much darker. Most of these songs were written during the pandemic, so there’s a throughline of imagination and storytelling to help with the monotony of everyday life. The stories became twisted, however, and some of the characters became evil or untrustworthy. It became more fun to write outside of my point of view at a time when I didn’t even really care about my own story.

That perspective ties together the entire "Lessons and Nonsense" collection, from the reflective calm of Vaguely Pleasant to the long-awaited arrival of The Express, before reaching its grand finale with "These Bugs." Across the EP, Spears freely wanders through psych rock, trip-hop, folk, and adventurous pop without ever feeling confined to one lane. Spaer will celebrate the release on August 20 with an EP release show at The Sultan Room Rooftop in Brooklyn, joined by Patching and Chammeili, Listen as Spaer bring these imaginative stories to life.
