Building around a mood that feels both fragile and fully formed, The Avalanches shape Blue Shadows with precision, The track carries their signature layered approach, but this time it leans deeper into atmosphere, allowing space to do as much work as sound. Karen O’s contribution brings vocals which feel embedded in the composition, rather than placed on top. The collaboration feels rooted in a shared understanding of tone and pacing. There’s a restraint against the emotional pull, but the single still delivers an impact. Karen O mentioned:

When Robbie sent me Blue Shadows I jumped at the chance to collaborate. The Avalanches last record We Will Always Love You was a gift to humanity in 2020 and I’ll count it as one of my Top 10 forever. The Avalanches frequency is high, I’m so happy to be asked to slide into it.

Compared to their more outward-facing releases this year, "Blue Shadows" pulls inward, prioritizing feeling over momentum. The result is one of their most emotionally focused records in recent memory. The Avalanches recently performed at Primavera Sound Barcelona and announced a run of London headline shows as part of Pitchfork Music Festival in November.
