Two Producers & One Laptop, MPH & Skrillex Chase Euphoria Through A "Mirage"

Blink once and the dancefloor is there; blink twice and MPH and Skrillex have turned it into a Mirage. The two producers collided into a rush of UK garage velocity, bass pressure, Jamaican dancehall lineage, and enough warped electricity to make stillness feel nearly impossible. Sampling Red Rat’s early-2000s dancefloor cut ShellyAnn, the record bends sputtering low end, ricocheting vocal fragments, bright chords, and driving percussion into something joyfully disorienting. There is a looseness behind all that machinery too, with the collaboration emerging from an afternoon spent trading ideas instead of a predetermined result. That spontaneity matters because neither producer sounds swallowed by the other; MPH’s garage instincts and Skrillex’s appetite for sonic mutation remain identifiable while constantly crossing wires. MPH said:
Skrillex would do some bits and pass the laptop to me. I’d do some bits and, pretty soon, we’d married our sounds together.
After MPH teased the track at EDC Las Vegas in May, its official arrival gives that festival-sized anticipation somewhere to finally explode. That marriage arrives while MPH’s own footprint keeps stretching far beyond the UK garage circuit. Festival appearances at Parklife, Lollapalooza and Outside Lands precede his largest headline dates yet, with Copenhagen opening the run September 19 before North America follows in October. Stops including Denver’s Ogden Theatre, Toronto’s Black Creek Assembly and New York City’s Knockdown Center give the producer increasingly larger rooms for his low-end architecture. His résumé already connects Coachella and Glastonbury with a Calvin Harris remix and support from selectors including Fred again.., Chris Lake, Disclosure, Peggy Gou and Sammy Virji. "Mirage" feels less like MPH catching up to dance music’s global conversation and more like another indication that his fingerprints are becoming part of it.
