Behind The Lens: JasonMartin Brings Compton’s Sound & Perspective To 'The Drop: A Snowfall Saga'
Sometimes getting your foot in the door means discovering how many rooms you can actually work in. For JasonMartin, also known to hip-hop audiences as Problem, stepping into FX’s The Drop: A Snowfall Saga goes considerably further than an acting debut. The Compton artist, songwriter, and producer makes his first appearance as Trig in Episode 3, "Family Matters," while simultaneously helping shape the series behind the camera as a creative consultant, original lyric writer, and vocal producer.
More Than A Guest Role
JasonMartin’s involvement puts years of West Coast musical experience directly inside the creative machinery of The Drop. Working across the series’ sonic landscape and visual identity, he brings perspective rooted in the culture the production is drawing from, helping its music and presentation remain connected to that foundation.
His responsibilities extend beyond the episodes themselves. Alongside Emil Pinnock, Martin serves as executive producer of both 'The Drop: A Snowfall Saga After Show' and the series’ official soundtrack, which releases new music weekly following episodes. The soundtrack brings together names including Terrace Martin, Snoop Dogg, Nipsey Hussle, Kurupt, and JasonMartin himself.
For Martin, receiving the opportunity also meant having people inside television recognize that his existing creative abilities could translate into a larger medium. Reflecting on Senior Executive Consultant Jimmy Chris opening that door and creator/showrunner Malcolm Spellman trusting him once he entered it, JasonMartin shared:
I wouldn’t be here without the show’s Senior Executive Consultant Jimmy Chris. He grabbed me and threw me into television headfirst because he believed in my talent and knew I deserved a shot on a stage this big. And to Malcolm Spellman (the creator and showrunner), the trust, guidance and empowerment he gave me throughout this entire process is still unbelievable. To have my first TV job be of this magnitude is something I’ll never forget and I’m grateful to be a part of the FX, Hulu and Snowfall family. I hope to be in this space for years to come. Compton Wins Again.
The significance isn't simply that a rapper landed a television opportunity. Martin is being given room to apply skills developed through music—writing, producing, directing creative ideas, understanding performance, and recognizing the details that make West Coast hip-hop feel authentic—across an entirely different production environment.
Taking The Music Inside The Story
That crossover becomes especially clear in the music. Martin and the show’s music creators have also opened up about incorporating an unreleased Nipsey Hussle verse into the official theme song, connecting the series to another unmistakable voice from West Coast hip-hop history.
Martin's résumé makes that transition feel less like a departure and more like an expansion. The Grammy-nominated Compton native has worked across songwriting, production, and creative direction with artists including Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa, Rapsody, and Lefty Gunplay. His previous screen work includes writing, producing, and starring in A Compton Story, appearing in Real Husbands of Hollywood, and writing the theme for the animated series Lil Kev.
Now television gives those disciplines somewhere to meet. Instead of leaving his musical identity behind when he steps onto the set, JasonMartin is using it as part of what he contributes once he gets there.
From Compton To A Bigger Creative Stage
'The Drop' also appears to be opening another lane in Martin's career. He is set to appear in the upcoming Snoop Dogg biopic Snoop, scheduled for August 6, 2027, and will continue combining acting with behind-the-scenes work as an actor and creative consultant on Kevin Hart’s upcoming Chocolate Droppa project.
There is something fitting about Martin ending his statement with "Compton Wins Again." His move into television isn't presented as an escape from where his career started. It is an opportunity to bring that experience into a bigger creative space—and prove how many different jobs one perspective can influence when somebody trusts it enough to enter the room.
