Sophie’s Body Turn A Broken Pedal Into "Long Term Loaner"

A broken pedal could have stopped the show, but Sophie’s Body turned the malfunction into the downbeat for "Long Term Loaner. The Boston quartet bends Sophie McMinn’s post-college uncertainty around wobbly guitars and a melody which thrives inside the band’s blunt-force volume. McMinn wrote the song after her TC Electronic Hall of Fame pedal failed immediately before a four-show run, leaving her with a warranty replacement and a phrase too useful to ignore. Dylan Hughes on drums, Harry Van Der Meer on bass, and Adam Hurt on guitar gave the wordplay enough force to move beyond the equipment story. Once "loaner" shifts toward "loner," the temporary fix becomes a sharper account of isolation and searching for purpose. McMinn traces that turn directly:
I started playing around with the homophone 'loner,' and that’s where I get into my angst a bit more. This was not a fun period in my life, I was feeling lonely, and really grasping for purpose post-college graduation.
“Long Term Loaner” leads into Zero, the band’s independently released debut album arriving October 30. McMinn calls the record an accidental concept album, with uncertainty, fear of failure, and the search for meaning connecting songs that were first written as individual experiences. Her classical vocal and violin background meets Hughes’ jazz instincts and the grunge foundation supplied by Van Der Meer and Hurt, explaining why the band can be intricate without losing impact. Justin Termotto produced both Zero and the 2025 EP Mandatory Girl at Thump Recording Studios in Brooklyn, while Sasha Stroud mastered the projects at Artifact Audio. The announcement follows Sophie’s Body’s first performance at Shaky Knees Music Festival and sends them into an October headline run across the Midwest and South before a 2027 appearance at New Colossus.
