Behind The Lens: Madison Jay (Part Dix)

How did your journey in music begin, and what inspired you to pursue a career in the industry? Can you tell us about your musical style and the genres that influence your work?

I just had a love for rap and hip-hop culture. I’ve always been talented with rapping so it just made sense to me to pursue rap in a business sense. My staple is mainly lyrical rap with a mix of quality music. I’m influenced by raw rap, jazz, house music, and just overall dope music. I’m not in any type of box being honest because I’m 100% authentically Madison Jay.

What's the story behind your latest release, and what message or emotion are you trying to convey through your music?

My latest project was These Carolina Nights. It was basically created off of the vibes of what a Carolina night feels like from sundown to sunrise. I like making albums with a central theme and I think I did a great job with this project.

How do you approach the songwriting process? Do you have a specific method or routine?

I usually like to get beats first then cook up from there. I’m very methodical with my process. I’m a perfectionist so I’m never just throwing chit to the wall and hoping it sticks. Everything is well planned out.

What challenges have you faced as an emerging artist, and how have you overcome them?

Mainly just outshining what the industry seems as popular or hot. It’s not a lot of challenges that I don’t face upfront. I embrace the challenges to be honest.

Are there any artists or bands that have had a significant impact on your musical journey?

I mean it’s so many artists that have impacted me. I got a toilet tissue list. If you look at my past interviews they’ll see their names.

How do you stay creative and inspired when working on new music?

I just keep in mind to always create on a high level. That’s the benchmark for me. It’s so many things to be inspired by for me to create. I just tap into different zones and chambers and pull from there.

Can you share a memorable moment or highlight from your career so far?

My kids being able to see me doing something I love and at such a high level. Going on DJ Kay Slay’s show and absolutely killing the freestyle segment. Performing at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, NC home of my favorite NBA team the Charlotte Hornets. Meeting Nipsey Hussle for his Crenshaw album release. Winning an award for Best Male Hip-Hop Artist in my hometown. Being able to create music how I want and putting it out whenever I want. These are just a few of the things, but I’ve really accomplished A LOT in all honesty within my career.

In what ways do you use social media and online platforms to connect with your audience?

Just having that direct contact with them. Getting real time feedback from the fans is actually kinda priceless.

What one inspirational quote or montra you believe in and where can people connect with you at?

“Don't give up, don’t ever give up." - Jim Valvano. You can connect with @TheMadisonJay on all social media platforms.
