Emerging from Brooklyn’s underground, Michael Quint introduces the world to his Americana-infused avant-pop persona, George Steel, with the release of his debut single, Not A Cowboy. This track, characterized by its smooth vocals and playful lyrical absurdities, is a preview of Steel’s forthcoming album, Desire On The Range, set to drop on October 4, 2024. With this project, Steel delves into the mythology of his character, blending raw Americana storytelling with avant-garde pop influences. The accompanying DIY music video, directed by Blake Nelson, further brings this character to life, featuring Steel navigating the streets of New York City with a never-ending cigarette, capturing the raw essence of his persona. In discussing “Not A Cowboy,” Michael Quint explains:
It is also (and primarily) a song to dance to. The chorus came from the voice that became George Steel's voice before I really knew who he was, and so it makes sense that lyrically in 'Not a Cowboy,' George chooses to define himself by what he is not.
Produced by Ernesto Grey and featuring contributions from over 20 musicians from Austin, TX, including members of Font, Lady Dan, and Loveme, "Desire On The Range" is set to be a genre-defying exploration of identity and Americana. The single showcases Steel’s ability to meld theatricality with a deep, resonant voice, creating a sound that is as engaging as it is innovative. With upcoming performances, including a show at Cassettes in Ridgewood, NY, on September 19, George Steel is poised to make a significant impact on the music scene.
