Koko Love Distills Hard-Won Truth On Debut Album "The Cost Of Freedom"

Freedom arrives through choices, risks, and the weight of consequence. Montreal indie alternative artist and producer Koko Love echoes that tension on his debut album The Cost Of Freedom. The project unfolds as a textured blend of indie alternative atmosphere and reflective songwriting. Rather than launching through a conventional digital rollout, the project first grew organically in physical spaces with shared hand-to-hand at shows and pressed into vinyl for listeners who encountered the music in real time. That deliberate pace gave the songs more room to resonate beyond algorithmic discovery. Now arriving online, the album carries the weight of those lived moments while expanding its reach to an even wider audience. For Love, that slower release process was part of the artistic philosophy itself. He explained:
Physical media matters to me because it slows things down. In a world that feels oversaturated and disposable, I think people, artists and listeners alike, are craving tangible things and real-life experiences–vinyl, CDs, shows, face-to-face moments. This project is as much about that feeling as it is about the songs themselves. Lyrically and sonically, it came from a very honest place, and letting it live this way felt like the most truthful way to put it out.
Produced alongside collaborator Soran Dussaigne, the album represents a formative chapter, one shaped by creative autonomy and shared experimentation. It’s a meditation on independence that feels both philosophical and deeply personal. Over the past year, Love has also expanded his reach through touring with Kyle Dion and collaborating with artists including Chiiild, Medasin, and Souly Had. The album’s streaming release arrives alongside a live performance short film recorded at Montreal’s underground venue Late Valentine, capturing the raw energy behind the record’s creation. With its introspective songwriting and grounded production, "The Cost Of Freedom" introduces an artist willing to build slowly and deliberately.
