Freak Flag crawls out of the speakers like a grin in a dark hallway. Disturbing has rarely felt this good as Austin punks TEAR DUNGEON turn an undeniable riff into a scuzzy, skronky pressure point. Favoring bodily reaction over tidy explanations, the song captures the rough collision of their live shows while leaving enough space for every scrape to register. There is mischief in the repetition, but also menace in how confidently the band lets it linger. It also sharpens the appetite for Squirm, their sophomore album arriving October 2 through TODO Records. The two-night Hotel Vegas stand on September 3 and 4 brings that abrasion back to Austin in its natural habitat.
The new single follows "I’m Not Dead Yet," another stripped-to-the-studs blast that introduced the album’s survival instinct, following sessions with Stuart Sikes and finishing work from John Michael Landon and Greg Obis. With the band newly represented by Pitch and Smith for UK and European booking, this uglier, wider chapter already feels eager to travel.
