Radio Free Alice Find The Nerve Inside "What’s In Between"

Written By: Big C

Radio Free Alice bring sharp guitar riffs and melody impulses together on What’s In Between. Noah Learmonth, Jules Paradiso, Michael Phillips and Lochie Dowd carry a new-wave and post-punk vocabulary into a record that welcomes a memorable hook. Rhythmic bite can keep an indie-rock song restless while melody gives its uncertainty a phrase listeners want to stay with. Big Ideas brings Rachel Brown of Water From Your Eyes into the vocal exchange, adding another perspective to the quartet’s guitar-led identity. Sessions with Peter Katis, Ewan Pearson and Finn Billingham across three continents gave the eleven-song debut several places to develop. Speaking on The Intersection Learmonth explains:
'The Intersection' is a story about someone keeping up a relationship in the outside world while receiving treatment in a mental hospital. It’s a love story, really. It’s a love song. It’s definitely our poppiest song to date and a part of that makes us a little nervous… but I think we find that exciting. We’re a band that doesn't want to be afraid or insecure about being boldly melodic.

On The Intersection, Learmonth places a relationship within the experience of receiving psychiatric treatment, bringing a difficult separation into the band’s most openly pop-minded song yet. Kevin Lombardo’s video moves that exposure into an art gallery, where the musicians are scrutinized and sold while trying to perform. The setting makes the pressure of being watched tangible without needing to illustrate every detail of the lyric.
